NBA Survivor Pools

Weekly NBA survivor asks you to pick one team per week and survive if they finish that week at or above .500. Basketball's schedule can make this a challenge: NBA weeks vary between two and five games, back-to-backs are common, and a four-game week with three on the road is a much worse proposition than a two-game homestand against the bottom of the conference — even for the better team.

Load management and rest days add a layer no other survivor sport has. A first-place team resting three starters on the second night of a back-to-back can drop a week that looked automatic when picks were made. Reading the schedule and the injury report can be critical here.

The season runs long enough to support a large field with multiple lives, and the optional Bonus Pool is available for NBA pools — rewarding statistical achievements from weekly selections, and opt-in for each entrant.

How to set up a NBA Survivor pool

  1. Understand the weekly shapeNBA weeks range from two to five games. Entrants survive by finishing at or above .500 across whatever their team plays that week, so game count is as important as opponent quality.
  2. Set lives and entriesA long season plus schedule volatility means multiple lives keeps the pool healthy. Multiple entries per person work well for larger groups.
  3. Enable missed-pick insuranceOptional, and worth it over a season this long. A missed pick can be auto-assigned as the most popular pick or a random eligible team.
  4. Consider the Bonus Pool, then invite your groupOptional for the pool and opt-in for each entrant. Results and eliminations are computed from live game data.

Frequently asked questions

How does weekly NBA survivor work?
You pick one NBA team each week. If they finish that week at or above .500 across their scheduled games, you advance. If they finish under .500 you lose a life, and the last entry standing wins the pool.
How many games are in an NBA weekly period?
It varies — typically between two and five. That variance is central to the format: a two-game week only needs a 1-1 split to survive, while a four-game week needs at least a 2-2.
Does rest or load management affect the pool?
It affects your strategy, not the rules. A team resting starters can easily drop a week it was favored in, which is why reading the schedule for back-to-backs and long road trips matters more here than in most survivor sports.
What happens if a team goes exactly .500?
An even record survives — the threshold is finishing under .500, not failing to finish above it. That matters a lot in the NBA, where two-game weeks are common: a 1-1 split is a pass, so a light schedule can be a safer pick than a heavier one against weaker opposition.
Is the Bonus Pool available for NBA pools?
Yes. It is an optional component that pays for statistical achievements from an entrant's weekly selection. Commissioners choose whether to offer it and which bonuses to include; entrants choose individually whether to opt in.
