World Cup Survivor Pools
World Cup Survivor plays out live across the whole tournament rather than being decided in one sitting beforehand. The tournament splits into the Group Stage and the Knockout Stage, and you pick teams period by period as it unfolds — surviving to the next period or losing a life.
The Group Stage moves fast. Most periods are a single day, each carrying at least four matches, with the first two days combined into one opening period. That is a much tighter rhythm than a weekly football pool.
Two rules make the format its own thing. Team usage resets when the Group Stage ends, so a side you spent in the groups is available again in the knockouts — which changes how freely you spend the favorites early. Most pools will also be set up to require multiple picks in each of the Knockout rounds..
How to set up a World Cup Survivor pool
- Set lives for a fast group stageMost group-stage periods are a single day. With that many scoring periods packed into two weeks, a single-life pool can empty out long before the knockouts.
- Decide on multiple entriesCommon in tournament pools, because the compressed schedule gives an unlucky entry very little chance to recover.
- Confirm the usage resetTeam usage resets at the end of the group stage. Make sure entrants know it before they decide how freely to spend the tournament favourites.
- Invite everyone before the openerPeriods, advancement and standings are driven by live match data as the tournament plays out.

Frequently asked questions
- How does World Cup Survivor work?
- The tournament is split into the Group Stage and the Knockout Stage. You pick teams period by period — most group-stage periods are a single day with at least four matches, and the first two days are combined into one opening period. Survive to advance; run out of lives and you are out. In the Group Stage, entrants will advance if their selections win OR draw in their matches, since there is no extra time or penalty kicks in the Group Stage.
- Does team usage reset after the group stage?
- Yes. Usage resets once the group stage is complete, so a team you used in the groups can be picked again in the knockout rounds. That is worth planning around — spending a favorite early costs you less than it would in a season-long pool.
- How do Knockout Stage picks work?
- For most pools, Knockout picks will be made as a pair of teams rather than a single selection, and your advancement depends on how both of those selections fare in the round. Each of an entrant's selections in every period will need to win in order for an entry to advance.
- How long is a World Cup Survivor period?
- Most group-stage periods are one day, each with a minimum of four matches. The exception is the opening period, which combines days one and two of the tournament. Knockout periods follow the rounds.
- How is this different from a World Cup bracket pool?
- A bracket is filled in before a ball is kicked and scored as results come in. Survivor has you picking live, period by period, with real information — so it stays competitive deep into the tournament.
- How many lives should a World Cup Survivor pool have?
- This is up to the Commissioner. The Group Stage packs a scoring period into almost every day, so a single-life pool tends to lose most of its field before the knockout rounds begin. Pools can optionally be configured to allow revivals through the end of the Group Stage, but end the revival period once the Knockout rounds kick off.
