POOL FORMATS

WORLD CUP BRACKETS
–
The World Cup has two phases: a Group Stage (12 four-team groups) and a Knockout Stage (Round of 32 through the Final).
–
Group Stage picks (predicting each group's final standings) lock before the first group game.
–
Knockout bracket picks lock before the Round of 32 begins — after the group stage concludes and the 32 advancing teams are known. You'll have roughly one day to fill out your bracket once the group stage ends.
–
Points are awarded for each correct knockout pick. The point value increases each round based on your pool's scoring settings.

World Cup Bracket Pools

A World Cup bracket pool is the format most people already know: predict the tournament in advance, then score points as your picks come through. ALA runs it in two parts — predict each group's final standings, fill out the knockout bracket, or do both — so a pool can be as light or as detailed as a group wants.

It is the right format for a group that wants everyone involved from the first whistle with no ongoing admin. One submission, no weekly deadlines to chase, and a scoreboard that updates itself as results land. That is the trade against survivor: less to do, but the pool is largely shaped by the end of the group stage.

Two configuration details matter more here than in most bracket products. Knockout picks use a commissioner-configurable lock offset, so picks can close at the point that suits your group rather than at a fixed time. And a pool created after the tournament has already started is handled explicitly — rounds already played are not scored, and the pool begins from the round the commissioner sets.

How to set up a World Cup Bracket pool

  1. Choose group predictions, the knockout bracket, or bothGroup standings reward following the draw closely; the knockout bracket is the familiar headline game. Running both gives a pool two scoring phases.
  2. Set the knockout lock offsetDecide when knockout picks close. The default follows the tournament schedule, and a commissioner can shift it to suit their group.
  3. Set the starting round if you are joining lateA pool created mid-tournament starts from a round you choose. Rounds already completed are not scored, so nobody is credited or penalised for matches played before the pool existed.
  4. Invite everyone before the openerScoring, advancement and standings update automatically as results come in.

Frequently asked questions

How does a World Cup bracket pool work?
You predict the tournament before it starts — each group's final standings, the knockout bracket, or both — and earn points for each correct pick as results come in. The highest total at the end of the tournament wins. Due to the complexity of the latest World Cup format, if a pool is including both Group Stage and Knockout picks, Knockout picks are made after the bracket is finalized following the conclusion of the Group Stage.
Can I run Knockout bracket predictions without Group Stage selections?
Yes. The two parts are independent, so a pool can score bracket picks only if a Commissioner would rather not require Group Stage picks.
When do knockout bracket picks lock?
At a commissioner-configurable offset from the round. The default follows the tournament schedule, but a pool can set its own so picks close at a time that suits the group.
Can a bracket pool start after the tournament has begun?
Yes. A pool joining mid-tournament starts from a round the commissioner sets, and rounds that were already played are not scored — so late-joining entrants are not credited or penalised for matches that happened before the pool existed.
Should I run a bracket pool or a survivor pool?
A bracket is one submission with no ongoing admin and gets everyone involved from the opening match, but it is largely shaped by the end of the group stage. Survivor keeps entrants making live decisions throughout and stays competitive far longer. Plenty of commissioners run both.
