NFL Credit Pools

An NFL Credit pool is a season-long handicapping contest in which entrants place theoretical wagers based on real-life odds. Each week the pool posts a board of NFL games carrying spreads, totals and moneylines, and entrants stake as much of their balance as they like across whichever lines they want. A winning wager returns the stake plus whatever the price pays; a losing one is gone. The biggest balance at the end of the season wins.

ALA 'credits' are the scoring currency. Some Commissioners may opt to cover their pools with a starting balance, with entrants being eliminated when they run out of credits; other Credit pools can be set up along the lines ALA's long-running Battle the Bookies format (an available preset within Credit pools), where entrants have no starting balances, but are instead required to make a fixed 100-credit bet on every game throughout the season.

Credit pools come with a slew of potential configuration options: which of the three standards, markets are offered, whether spreads and totals carry real-life juice or pay even-money, the minimum and maximum stake, how many plays are required each week, whether the lines are static for the week or move in live fashion and in concert with real markets, etc.

How to set up a NFL Credit pool

  1. Set the starting bankrollChoose whether your entrants should begin the season with a set starting balance and are eliminated when they run out of credits, or whether they are permitted to go into the red and continue wagering all season long.
  2. Choose the markets and the pricingOffer spreads, totals, moneylines, or any combination. Then decide whether prices carry real juice, which makes the pool a genuine handicapping exercise, or whether every wager pays even money, which keeps the math simple for a casual group.
  3. Decide how much action is required each weekAsk for a specific number of plays, a flexible range, or a wager on every game on the board. A weekly minimum sets a floor on credits risked, and a missed-play penalty charges an entry that leaves required slots empty.
  4. Pick static or live linesStatic lines are set once per game and never move, so entrants are wagering against the same line all week. Live lines track the real market right up to kickoff -- and render selections un-revocable once made -- which rewards timing a bet as much as picking a side.
  5. Invite your groupWagers settle automatically as games go final, and balances update live while games are still in progress, so the standings show what each entry is up or down as results come in.

Frequently asked questions

How does an NFL Credit pool work?
Each entry typically starts the season with a bankroll of credits. Every week you place wagers against the pool board — spreads, totals and moneylines on NFL games — and each wager settles when the game goes final. Balances carry over week to week all season, and the entry with the most credits at the end wins.
Is a Credit pool real sports betting?
No. Nothing is wagered but credits, which exist only inside the pool and cannot be cashed out for anything. ALA credits in Credit pools are used purely as a vehicle for scorekeeping.
What is Battle the Bookies?
It is a preset that removes the bankroll entirely. Entries start at zero, wager a fixed stake on every single game on the board every week, and are charged that same amount for any game they skip. Finish the season above zero and you have beaten the book — which, over a full NFL season, very few people do.
What happens if I run out of credits?
That depends on one setting. If the pool allows entries to exceed their balance, you simply keep betting and carry a negative number. If it does not, a busted entry cannot place another wager — but commissioners can enable re-buys, which restore the entry to the pool's starting balance for a set fee.
Do I have to bet every week?
Only if your commissioner says so. A pool can require a set number of plays, a minimum amount of credits risked, or nothing at all. Where a requirement exists and an entry does not meet it, the pool charges a penalty against the balance rather than eliminating anybody.
What does "juice" mean in a Credit pool?
Juice is the real sportsbook price attached to a line — laying 110 credits to win 100, for example, rather than winning 100 for 100. A commissioner can leave it on for a more realistic pool, or turn the juice off for simpler calculations.
