POOL FORMATS

CFB CREDIT
–
Start the season with a bankroll and bet the college football board -- spreads, totals and moneylines. Biggest balance at the end of the season wins.
–
Configure for games across the FBS, specific conferences, or Top 25 games. Optionally restrict games vs. FCS opponents.
–
Configurable for whether prices carry juice, a weekly minimum to wager, and how many plays are required each week -- counted against your pool's own slate, not the whole 60-game Saturday.
–
Battle the Bookies is a preset of these same settings: no starting balance, every game on the board required, a fixed stake, and a penalty for every game you skip. Finish the season above water and you have beaten the book.

College Football Credit Pools

A college football Credit pool is a season-long handicapping contest in which entrants place theoretical wagers based on real-life odds. Each week the pool posts a board of games priced with spreads, totals and moneylines, and entrants make 'credit' wagers against that board. A winning wager returns the stake plus whatever the price pays; a losing one is gone. The biggest balance at the end of the season wins.

The first question a college pool has to answer is which games are even on the board, because sixty-odd FBS games on a single Saturday is far too much for anyone to price an opinion on. The board can be scoped to all of FBS, to specific conferences, or to Top 25 matchups only, and games against FCS opponents can be excluded — which many commissioners do, since a 38-point line against an overmatched FCS side is not a handicapping question many people enjoy.

That scoping carries through the rest of the rules — weekly play requirements are counted against your pool's own slate rather than the whole Saturday, so an SEC-only pool asks for SEC bets, or a Top 25 pool allows entrants more options. ALA 'credits' are the scoring currency: some Commissioners cover their pools with a starting balance and eliminate entrants who run out of credits, while others run ALA's long-running Battle the Bookies format (an available preset), where entrants have no starting balance but are instead required to make a fixed 100-credit bet on every game on their slate each week. Markets, juice, stake limits and static-or-live pricing all work the same way they do in the NFL version.

How to set up a CFB Credit pool

  1. Scope the board firstAll of FBS, one or more conferences, or Top 25 matchups only. This is the single most consequential setting in the format — it decides how much homework a week asks of your entrants, and a conference-scoped board is far more approachable than an open one.
  2. Set the bankroll, markets and pricingChoose whether entrants begin the season with a set starting balance and are eliminated when they run out of credits, or are permitted to go into the red and continue wagering all season long. Then decide which of spreads, totals and moneylines are offered, whether prices carry juice, and the minimum and maximum an entry may stake on a single wager.
  3. Set weekly requirements and penaltiesRequire a specific number of plays, a range, or a wager on every game on your slate — and decide what it costs an entry to fall short. Requirements are capped to the slate, so a light week never charges anyone for games that were not there.
  4. Invite your groupWagers settle from live scoring as games go final, and balances update while the afternoon slate is still running, so the standings show what each entry is up or down as results come in. Pools can start at Week 0 and can optionally run through Conference Championship weekend.

Frequently asked questions

How does a college football Credit pool work?
Every entry typically begins with a balance of credits and bets a weekly board of college football games. Each wager settles when its game ends, adding or subtracting credits, and those balances run all season. The highest balance at the end of the year takes the pool.
Can I limit the board to one conference or the Top 25?
Yes. A pool can be scoped to one or more conferences, Top 25 matchups using that week's AP rankings, or a custom set of games that the Commissioner chooses.
How many bets does an entrant have to place each week?
Whatever the commissioner decides — a fixed count, a flexible range, or a play on every game the pool has posted. Falling short costs credits rather than a life, and the requirement always measures against your own scoped slate rather than the full college football schedule.
What happens if I run out of credits?
This is dependent on the pool's format. If the pool allows entries to exceed their balance, you simply keep betting and carry a negative number. If it does not, a busted entry cannot place another wager — but commissioners can enable re-buys, which restore the entry to the pool's starting balance for a set fee.
Does Battle the Bookies work for college football?
Yes. The preset drops the bankroll to zero, requires a flat-stake play on every game on your board each week, and charges that same stake for any game skipped. Paired with a conference or Top 25 scope it becomes a genuinely difficult season-long test against the closing numbers.
